Photo of a messy, and unsafe workplaceIf you were exposed to asbestos at your workplace, you are at risk for developing mesothelioma, an “aggressive and deadly form of cancer” that forms in the “thin layer of tissue that covers the majority of your internal organs.”1

Your Risk Factor for Developing Mesothelioma Depends on Your Industry

Despite safety laws and regulations placed on these businesses, “as many as 1.3 million people in the U.S. go to a workplace where they’re exposed to significant amounts of asbestos, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.”2 This is because asbestos was an industrial favorite for many decades due to its natural heat resistant properties. In the 1970s, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) banned all asbestos-containing sprays applied to pipes and insulation, but they were unsuccessful in banning all products containing asbestos. According to the EPA, here are some asbestos-containing products still manufactured, imported, processed, and distributed today:

  • Cement corrugated sheet
  • Cement flat sheet
  • Clothing
  • Pipeline wrap
  • Roofing felt
  • Vinyl flooring3

In work environments where asbestos is present, employers are required to prevent exposure at all costs “by establishing regulated areas, controlling certain work practices, and instituting engineering controls to reduce airborne levels.”4 When these safety codes are violated, asbestos exposure can change the lives of both employees and employers with mesothelioma diagnoses and closure of businesses. In Springfield, Illinois, a Pillsbury Mills plant remains closed after the EPA removed “2,200 tons of asbestos-contaminated debris, 1,160 cubic yards of bulk asbestos, and considerable waste oil and chemicals.”5
